Side effects: The ACWY vaccine may lead to mild side effects like redness, swelling at the injection site, tiredness, and occasionally, a high temperature. Additional precautions: Seek immediate medical attention if you or a fellow traveller show signs of meningitis. Note, the ACWY vaccine does not cover meningitis B. Risks caused by meningitis: Meningitis can lead to inflammation around the spinal cord and brain, potentially causing brain damage and death.

Meningitis is transmitted through close contact via nasal or throat droplets, such as coughing, sneezing, or kissing. The meningitis ACWY vaccination guards against A, C, W, and Y bacterial strains. To ensure protection before travelling to a high-risk area, aim to receive the vaccine at least two weeks in advance.
